The other night I went to see King Louie (The Royal Pendeltons:
King Louie helped found the Royal Pendeltons in 1991 along with Michael Hurtt on guitar/vocals, J. Matthew Uhlman on guitar/vocals, and G. Thomas Oliver on organ. The Pendeltons put out their first 7" out on Goner Records in 1995, and in 1998 put out a full-length LP out on Sympathy for the Record Industry with producer Alex Chilton entitled Oh, Yeah Baby.
The Persuaders:
King Louie Bankston formed the critically-acclaimed and highly influential garage rock band, The Persuaders in 1996, along with Jason Panzer on guitar, and Shaggy on drums. In The Persuaders, Louie and Jason Panzer both sang and played Gibson Flying V guitars. The Reatards, featuring Jay Reatard opened for The Persuaders on the very first The Reatards tour.
The Bad Times:
Bad Times were a one-off band which also included Eric Friedl and Jay Reatard. The band recorded an album’s worth of material after only one practice session in 1998, releasing a self-titled LP in 2001. After one live performance the band disbanded, the members returning to their respective solo commitments.
The Exploding Hearts:
In 2000, Louie moved to Portland, OR and joined the Exploding Hearts(2002), where he co-wrote, and played keyboards on their only LP, Guitar Romantic.
King Louie and the Loose Diamonds:
In 2007, Empty Records released Memphis Treet by King Louie and the Loose Diamonds. The Loose Diamonds are: King Louie Bankston, Jack Yarber (Oblivians, Cool Jerks, Tearjerkers), Harlan T. Bobo (Viva L'American Deathray Music), Adam Woodard (Tearjerkers), and Chad Booth (Kajun SS).
The King Louie One Man Band:
King Louie started his One Man Band in 1999. In the King Louie One Man Band, Louie sings, plays drums, guitar, cowbell, and harmonia. The King Louie One Man Band has released several 7" records on various labels, and put out a full-length LP on Goner in 2004.) and his "new" band, The Missing Monuments.

I met Louie in Portland, Oregon sometime in 2000, as we both were recent transplants to the area. After some time I ended up living with some band mates of his so I would see him quite frequently.
There were a few times back then when I would be awoke during the wee hours of the morning. the sound that brought me from my slumber was that of pebbles being thrown against the glass of my second story bedroom window, accompanied by the slight whisper of my name over and over again.
" Hey Dave! Hey Dave! It's me, It's me Louie, Hey Dave wake up man.!!"
This would go on of course until I would get up and see what it was that Louie wanted. It was always to borrow some scratch for a late night crack binge. Why it was I that he felt comfortable enough to ask for these "small favors" I will never know, and in secret no less-from the relative safety of the bushes below.
So I thought I would go see Ol'Louie and his new band of rockers. So I did.
We talked about the PDX days, Fucking Katrina, moldy records and lost friends. I told Louie about my faux journalistic blog and asked if it would be okay to record his band for this purpose. He said I could record their set but I should not put it on the internets, "in case they fuck up or sound like shit or something."
So there you have it. One of the most talented garage rockers (his one man band was truly a thing of Primitive beauty)to ever come from Harahan, Louisiana and his Fire was gone. His leather coat was gone. His shaggy hair cut was gone. His pet pig is gone. His Sears Silvertone GONE!!! It all has been replaced by a preppy over weight lazy surfer type(much like myself)slinging a day glow strat.
My Gawd!! Time Destroys us.
Anyway this guy up top opened up for The Missing Monuments(?WTF?) and he didn't mind if I posted a video of him. So I am. This (i believe) was his first show. I am still waiting for him to send me an E*mail with information. until he does we are S.O.L.

also on the bill this night was Andrew Graham & Swarming Branch but I ran out of battery power in both the camera and myself. Next Time.

"In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey, No Mas and artist James Blagden proudly present the animated tale of Dock Ellis' legendary LSD no-hitter. In the past few years we've heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs from greenies to tetrahydrogestrinone, and not enough about performance inhibiting drugs. If our evaluation of the records of athletes like Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds needs to be revised downwards with an asterisk, we submit that that Dock Ellis record deserves a giant exclamation point. Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid.

Sadly, the great Dock Ellis died last December at 63. A year before, radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, had recorded an interview with Ellis in which the former Pirate right hander gave a moment by moment account of June 12, 1970, the day he no-hit the San Diego Padres. Alexander and Ilels original four minute piece appeared March 29, 2008 on NPRs Weekend America. When we stumbled across that piece this past June, Blagden and Isenberg were inspired to create a short animated film around the original audio."

this huge grass and concrete patio but the weather

forced all inside the "chicken shack"

This is their whole set* from Old Man Skate Jam 2

in beautiful Massillon Ohio. The bar they played in

was larger, had more t.v.'s (lost count at 33), and was

more sporty than a BW3's. Filled to the brim with

30-42 year old dudes who used to skate a lot, but now

mostly pack on the pounds with light beers (jesus gawd!)

and chicken wings, their significant others, their kids,

a few locals who had no idea what was about to

happen ( we're talking Golden Buckeye here), and a

plethora of Columbus Ohio bands of every shape, size,

and color.

Head count at this time (bands, customers, skate jammers,

bar workers, whatever) was 69 persons (no fooling).

It was dinner time and not 13 feet away from CHRIST was

a happy family(?). Who's first born child was named Christopher

(after the Christ child, son of god dude), who in turn would

be taking the stage later this evening ( not son of god Christopher

but mom and pop Christopher.(twice for CHRIST sakes)).

They were enjoying plates with piles of wings, burgers,

deep fried goodies, and $9.99 Steaks with a starchy side and a

scoop of slaw, chocked back with diet sodas, more light beers,

and a Crown on the rocks.

Then CHRIST took the stage.

* 45 seconds total were trimmed off the front and end of the set

so it would be able to fit on the u tube.
